Expedition Looks For Crude In Sunken Oil Tanker

The oil tanker S.S. Montebello was sunk by a Japanese submarine during World War II off the coast of California. A recent expedition to the wreck found that oil believed to still be in the ship is not there. It's full of seawater. It's the Al Capone's vault of the sea, if you will.

Our Pad App Allows For Multiple User Accounts On Facebook, Gmail, Twitter On iPad

Advertisements

Got multiple family members but only one iPad? Congratulations, you are facing what is called a first world problem and the good thing is, there is a solution for it. 2011102216153383

We came across the solution for this today: it?s called Our Pad and it lets you switch between multiple profiles (one for, say, each family member) integrated with online services such as Gmail, Yahoo! Mail and Facebook so folks don?t have to log-out and log-in every time the iPad is passed around.

Developed by Ghori Networks, Our Pad for iPad lets you switch between and browse accounts so that you don?t have to re-enter your ID and password for services like Facebook, Gmail every time you get your iPad back after it has been used by, say, your wife and kids.

Each profile in Our Pad can be protected with the help of an Android-like pattern-based unlock. This is to ensure that you don?t have to worry about other people reading your email, messages and direct messages.

From App Store:

This app allows you and other family members, spouses and children to login to their favorite social networking sites and email services without having the need to type in a password each time. "Our Pad" manages your sign-in and sign-out and you never have to worry about prying eyes or leaving your private emails open accidentally. Access to your accounts is granted by providing a lock pattern using a series of connecting dots.

mzl.ujilpnae.480x480-75

We?ve tested the app on an iPad and can confirm that the app works as claimed. The first thing we noticed was Our Pad not integrating with supported services at a system level like Windows Phone 7 does. Instead, you get to browse the supported services? ? Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Facebook and Twitter ? through their official websites in a internet browser environment. The developer cannot be blamed for this, since this restriction is because of the limited freedom that iOS gives to third-party apps.

Besides this, while all claimed features of Our Pad are there, the app was quite buggy and it did crash regularly during testing. We?re hoping these incessant crashes will be fixed in a future update.

If you?re interested, Our Pad can be downloaded for free from the link embedded below.

Nevada Republicans to meet about caucus date (The Ticket)

(Ethan Miller/Getty Images)

Amid intense pressure from New Hampshire state officials, Nevada Republicans appear to be wavering a tad in their decision to hold the state's 2012 presidential caucus on Jan. 14.

A week after Nevada GOP chairwoman Amy Tarkanian insisted the party's selected caucus date was firm, she?appeared less certain about the calendar in an interview with CNN, suggesting negotiations are still ongoing.

"It's not necessarily a different answer. It's just the more discussions you have the more you take into perspective," Tarkanian told CNN after Tuesday's GOP debate in Las Vegas. "You just have to weigh pros and cons--so, as of now, we are still on the 14th."

Her comments come ahead of a scheduled state GOP meeting on Saturday, where the back and forth over the caucus date is sure to come up. Some state Republicans are unhappy because Nevada will lose delegates to the national GOP convention in moving its primary date from February to January.

State Republicans are also starting to feel nervous over the prospect that their election could be deemed irrelevant amid threats of boycotts from some GOP contenders who are pushing Nevada to delay its date to accommodate New Hampshire's "first in the nation" primary.

"I think we can reach a mutual understanding where everybody will be happy," Heidi Smith, a national GOP committeewoman from Nevada, told the Des Moines Register's Jason Noble.

New Hampshire Secretary of State Bill Gardner and other state officials are pushing Nevada to delay its caucus to Jan. 17, which would allow the Granite State to set its primary date on Jan. 10th. If that doesn't happen, Gardner has threatened to move New Hampshire's 2012 primary to Dec. 6 or Dec. 13?citing a state law that requires a seven-day interval between the state's primary and a "similar election."

But as Politico's Reid Epstein notes, that move could potentially violate federal laws that require election officials to send out military ballots at least 45 days before an election.

Meanwhile, New Hampshire Republicans continue to question what role Mitt Romney's campaign played in pressing Nevada to move up its caucus date. As The Ticket previously reported, a Nevada Republican involved in scheduling the caucus told reporters the party had been lobbied by Romney's campaign to move up its vote in order to boost his campaign.

Romney officials haven't quite denied the allegation, and that's prompted some grumbling among New Hampshire Republicans. The charges of calendar-fixing from the Romney camp also provoked a scathing editorial in the Union Leader newspaper accusing the former Massachusetts governor of jockeying to sacrifice tradition for "political gain."

In a conference call with New Hampshire supporters ahead of Tuesday's debate, Romney made no mention of the allegation he meddled in the primary schedule?nor was he asked. But he reiterated his support for the state's first-in-the-nation primary, insisting he would take his "lead" from Gardner on the issue. At the same time, Romney stopped well short boycotting Nevada, as some Republicans have called on him to do.

"I respect the men and women of the state and also respect and unequivocally support New Hampshire's status as our country's first primary," Romney said, appearing to read from a written statement.

Who Should Exit 2012 Republican Presidential Race? (ContributorNetwork)

ANALYSIS | With only a few months to go before the first votes of the 2012 GOP primary will be cast, only a handful of the current field of Republican candidates still have a decent shot at winning the nomination. The remaining candidates are either polling below the statistical error or having significant financial troubles. Here are some of the Republican candidates most likely to drop out in the coming months.

1. Gary Johnson

The former New Mexico governor is the invisible man in the 2012 GOP race. Johnson's campaign has received very little media coverage. Most voters either don't know who he is or are unfamiliar with his campaign platforms. The North Dakota native has only been invited to two of the eight televised debates. His performances in these two debates were rather forgettable, though he did attract some attention for a funny line about "shovel-ready" jobs. It was revealed later that he might have borrowed the line from Rush Limbaugh.

In addition to barely registering in national polls, Johnson has also been excluded from most major straw polls due to insufficient support. It is inconceivable that Johnson would be able to obtain enough signatures to get on the ballot in key primary states.

2. Rick Santorum

For the former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania to have success in the Republican primary, he will need to win the social conservative vote. Unfortunately, competition for this key GOP voting bloc is rather stiff with several other candidates including Rick Perry, Herman Cain and Michele Bachmann also vying for the big prize. It is doubtful that Santorum has the resources to compete against these three leading candidates in states like Iowa and South Carolina. Santorum's campaign should last at least until the Iowa caucuses, but is unlikely to progress beyond that.

3. Jon Huntsman

The former Utah governor has hoped that his strong appeal to moderate Republicans and independents will help carry him to the nomination. Unfortunately, Mitt Romney has managed to upstage him in winning over these two critical voting blocs. The latest Insider Advantage poll shows Romney beating Huntsman by a whopping 34 percent in independent-rich New Hampshire. Huntsman is tied for fourth behind Herman Cain and Ron Paul. The Utah native has his reasons to stay in the race through the New Hampshire primary, but his campaign is likely to end there.

Ryan apologizes for comments about Chargers

(AP) ? Jets coach Rex Ryan admits he messed up in his comments about the San Diego Chargers, New York's opponent this week.

Ryan says Thursday that he didn't intentionally diss the Chargers or coach Norv Turner by saying "I would have had a couple of rings" had the team hired him as head coach in 2007.

Instead, Turner got the job, and the Chargers have not won any championships.

Ryan was hired by the Jets in 2009.

He spoke with Turner on Wednesday shortly after making his comments, which also included how "loaded" the Chargers were in the last few seasons. Ryan characterizes his comments as "unintentional," and that he expects them not to damage his relationship with Turner.

BP settlement: Anadarko adds $4 billion to pay spill claims

BP settlement with Anadarko reduces chances of punitive damages for 2010 Gulf spill. Despite BP settlement, other lawsuits and fines still loom for oil giant.

Anadarko Petroleum Co. has agreed to pay $4 billion to BP PLC as part of a settlement related to last year's Gulf of Mexico oil spill, adding weight to BP's contention that it was not solely responsible for the disaster.

BP said Monday that Anadarko's payment will form part of the British company's $20 billion trust fund, which has paid out $7 billion so far to settle claims from individuals and businesses. Eleven workers were killed when the Deepwater Horizon rig at the Macondo well exploded off Louisiana on April 20, 2010, causing the largest oil spill in U.S. history.

BP has now reached settlements with both of its partners in the Macondo well.

However, it is still embroiled in lawsuits and countersuits with Transocean Ltd., operator of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, and Halliburton Co., which was responsible for cementing the well. The suits are scheduled to go to trial in New Orleans in February.

BP also faces the prospect of fines in the tens of billions of dollars.

The market cheered the Anadarko's BP settlement, pushing BP shares 4 percent higher at 433 pence in early afternoon trading on the London Stock Exchange.

"The acceptance of partial liability by Anadarko further reduces the likelihood of punitive damages against BP," Jonathan Jackson, head of equities at Killik & Co.

"If the group is not found grossly negligent, fines relating to the incident would be a basic amount of $1,100 per barrel, as opposed to $4,300 per barrel if found guilty, Jackson said, adding that the not-guilty verdict would still cost the company $15.7 billion.

BP has made provisions for up to $42 billion in costs from the blowout, and it has embarked on raising $30 billion by selling assets.

Anadarko, based in The Woodlands, Texas, is handing over its 25 percent stake in the well to BP as part of the settlement.

The agreement also gives Anadarko a potential share in funds which BP recovers from third parties or insurance. If BP's total recovery exceeds $1.5 billion, Anadarko would get 12.5 percent of the excess, or up to $1 billion, BP said.

"This settlement agreement with BP is the right action for our stakeholders, as it removes significant uncertainty regarding future liabilities and associated risks," said Jim Hackett, chairman and CEO of Anadarko.

"This settlement represents a positive resolution of a significant uncertainty and it resolves the issues among all the leaseholders of the Macondo well," said BP Chief Executive Bob Dudley.

"There is clear progress with parties stepping forward to meet their obligations and help fund the economic and environmental restoration of the Gulf," Dudley said. "It's time for the contractors, including Transocean and Halliburton, to do the same."

In May, BP announced a settlement with the other partner in the well, MOEX Offshore 2007 LLC, which owned 10 percent it. That company agreed to pay BP $1 billion.

Weatherford International Inc., a contractor based in Switzerland, also agreed in June to pay $75 million to the trust fund to settle claims between it and BP. Weatherford manufactured the float collar, designed to help contain cement, used in the blown-out well.

U.S. regulators last week cited BP PLC, Transocean Lld. and Halliburton for alleged safety and environmental violations stemming from last year's rig explosion and massive Gulf oil spill.

The companies were given 60 days to appeal the citations issued by the U.S. Interior Department's Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement.

A report issued last month by the panel of government investigators laid ultimate responsibility on BP for the disaster, which spewed roughly 200 million gallons (750 million liters) of oil into the Gulf.

BP ignored crucial warnings and made bad decisions during the cementing of the well, but Transocean and Halliburton shared some of the blame, the report concluded.

In its asset disposal program, BP has announced at least 15 sales including:

?Its 60 percent stake in Argentina-based oil and gas producer Pan American Energy to Bridas Corp. of Argentina for $7 billion.

?A bundle of onshore gas assets to Apache Corp. for $7.1 billion.

?Its oil and gas exploration business in Colombia for $1.9 billion to Ecopetrol of Colombia and Talisman of Canada.

?Energy assets in Venezuela and Vietnam to its Russian joint venture TNK-BP for $1.8 billion.
