Pew Internet Study: '13% of cell owners pretended to be using their phone' (Digital Trends)

As the world continues adjusting to new technologies and social norms change at a rate on par with Moore?s Law, sociologists and pollsters have had a plethora of interesting data to examine. A new study from Pew Internet has shed some startling, if not somewhat humorous light on how Americans adults are using their cell phones. (Only 17 percent are without the device today.)

The survey of 2,277 adults found that 13 percent of cell phone users had faked checking their phone or being on it to avoid human interaction. The younger demographic, 18 to 29-year olds, cited the highest percentage of this behavior with 30 percent saying they?d avoided contact with someone by checking their phone.

Also of note, 42 percent of this demographic cited having trouble doing a task or work because their phone wasn?t nearby.

Across all demographics, ?Half of all adult cell owners (51%) had used their phone at least once to get information they needed right away,? the study reported.

?One quarter (27%) said that they experienced a situation in the previous month in which they had trouble doing something because they did not have their phone at hand.? These results seem slightly more predictable, but do reveal a growing population that can?t be without its phone.

Roughly 35 percent of adults now own a smartphone.

Only 29 percent of adults say they?ve turned their cell phone off to get a break from use. Never hurts to tune out every now and then?even if you?re in the minority.

Once a fringe candidate, Paul shaping 2012 race (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Ron Paul, once seen as a fringe candidate and a nuisance to the establishment, is shaping the 2012 Republican primary by giving voice to the party's libertarian wing and reflecting frustration with the United States' international entanglements.

The Texas congressman placed second in a key early test vote Saturday in Ames, coming within 152 votes of winning the first significant balloting of the Republican nominating contest. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota won the nonbinding Iowa straw poll, but Paul's organizational strength and a retooled focus on social issues set him up to be a serious player in the campaign.

"I believe in a very limited role for government. But the prime reason that government exists in a free society is to protect liberty, but also to protect life. And I mean all life," he told a raucous crowd on Saturday.

"You cannot have relative value for life and deal with that. We cannot play God and make those decisions. All life is precious," he said, opening his remarks with an anti-abortion appeal to the social conservatives who have great sway here in Iowa's leadoff caucuses.

Later Saturday, Paul won 4,671 votes, or roughly 28 percent of the votes from party activists who flocked to a college campus for the daylong political carnival

Paul's narrow second-place finish pushed former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty down to third, leading Pawlenty on Sunday to abandon his effort to challenge President Barack Obama next November.

Four years ago, Paul sought the GOP nomination while talking about economic policy, liberty and the Federal Reserve. Since then, the tea party has risen and seized on those issues, and some regard Paul as one of the movement's godfathers.

"The country's bankrupt, and nobody wanted to admit it. And when you're bankrupt, you can't keep spending," Paul said Thursday during a Fox News Channel debate.

He may lack the broad appeal that former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney or Texas Gov. Rick Perry are claiming, but Paul's finish Saturday indicated he could compete.

Paul typically does well in such straw polls, which rely on supporters' intensity and organization. His base helped him win straw polls at June's Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans and February's Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, and his followers organize online to ensure strong finishes at any contest they can find.

It is part of their effort to get rid of the notion that Paul is a fringe candidate.

Paul's 2008 campaign came up far short of better organized rivals. This time, his advisers are putting together a more serious effort that taps into voters' frustrations with Washington and the fears about the economy.

His aides are working within the system instead of against it. For instance, Paul's base camp for the Iowa straw poll was at the same location Romney used in 2007. Romney won that straw poll after investing heavily from his deep pockets for the prime real estate.

Paul's campaign notes that it won more votes this year than Romney won four years ago during his first bid for the GOP nomination. This year, Romney didn't actively campaign during the straw poll; instead, he is looking at a campaign launch in New Hampshire, which hosts the first primary after Iowa's leadoff caucuses.

Still, Paul finds himself outside the bounds of traditional Republicans. His opposition to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan defines him as a dove. His skepticism toward the Federal Reserve has spooked Wall Street. And his libertarian views on gay rights draw the ire of social conservatives.

He also tweaks Republicans on foreign policy, arguing it isn't the United States' role to police Iran's nuclear program or to enforce an embargo with Cuba.

"Iran is not Iceland, Ron," former Sen. Rick Santorum told Paul during Thursday's debate.

Paul also proves a reliable foil for Democrats.

"In previous presidential campaigns, we might have chalked extreme fringe-type candidates like Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul as an anomaly, (and) the Ames straw poll didn't mean as much," said Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee.

"But we're looking at the core of the Republican Party now. The heart of the Republican Party is the extreme right wing," she told CNN.

Paul, a 75-year-old doctor by training, is not backing down.

"These straw poll results, our growing poll numbers and our strong fundraising show that our message is resonating with Iowans and Americans everywhere," campaign chairman Jesse Benton said. "Our message was the same in 2007 as it is now in 2011, but this time we have quadrupled our support. That means our message is spreading, our support is surging and people are taking notice."

Citibank Student Loans Information | LeClair Enterprises

The basic purpose of these emergency student loans is to provide students who need financial aide and who are late with their loan application. Most students have almost become used to the yearly tuition increases imposed by colleges and universities. As a result very few students make it through college without some sort of financial assistance.

Most scholarships and grants fall short of college financial obligations. While tuition may be covered, often the hidden costs, books, room and board are often not part of the package. That is why the federal government and many state governments offer low interest student loans. Student loans differ from most other kinds of loans. There are three basic types of loans: loans directly to students, loans to parents of students and private loans. The direct student loans guaranteed by the Federal government are probably the most used resources although many parents prefer the financial obligation be on them.

A student loan, such as Perkins Loan or a Stafford loan is a loan that can charge no higher than about 8% interest. These loans do not start to require payments and accrue interest until six months after the student graduates. Though students are encouraged to pay down the loan while still in school, it is by no means a requirement. This is why student loans are an easy way to finance college and graduate school. But that does not mean there are no risks. While student loans come from federal and state government, the funds are administered by in large by private lending institution. One such institution is Citibank. Citibank student loans are second in number to Sallie Mae, another lending agency that is part of the multi- billion dollar a year industry.

Citibank student loans come with many services to help the person looking to finance their education. They offer a variety of helpful services in order to inform the consumer about what the probable cost will be for their education. They have debt calculators and other research papers on their website that offer an abundance of information for consumers. Citibank student loans have been made considerably more above board following the settlement of a law suit brought by the State of New York against them and several other lenders. This settlement insured that there would be no collusion between colleges and Citibank student loans to sway students toward their services.

The best idea then is to try your hardest to get your application form for financial aid in as soon as you can, so that you will not have to worry about going through for an emergency student loan or anything of the sort. They were also required to state in large print that students are not required to borrow money from only members of their preferred lender list. In this way, colleges maintain neutrality in the process and put the interests of the students over the interest of the lenders. By voluntarily settling, Citibank student loans has corrected its behavior and offers a product with more integrity. Self-policing and watchful regulators are insuring consumers that they are getting the best deal they can for their interests.

Thome, Blackburn lift Twins over Red Sox

By JON KRAWCZYNSKI

updated 11:37 p.m. ET Aug. 10, 2011

MINNEAPOLIS - Jim Thome hit a tiebreaking RBI double during Minnesota's three-run eighth inning and the Twins beat the Boston Red Sox 5-2 on Wednesday night.

Thome also had a run-scoring single and the Twins got an outstanding effort from Nick Blackburn to snap a six-game losing streak and avoid a sweep.

Thome hit the 119th pitch from Jon Lester (11-6) over Carl Crawford's head in left field for a 3-2 lead. Blackburn gave up an unearned run and six hits in 6 2-3 innings and Joe Nathan picked up his ninth save.

David Ortiz went 2 for 4 with a homer and Lester gave up four runs and eight hits in 7 1-3 innings for the Red Sox. The left-hander also issued five walks, tying a season high.

Danny Valencia added an RBI double and Tsuyoshi Nishioka came through with a run-scoring single off Alfredo Aceves to give Nathan a little breathing room heading into the ninth.

The Red Sox were losing 2-1 when Ortiz stepped into the box in the eighth against lefty Glen Perkins, who has been dominant this season but has struggled a bit in the last week.

It was power against power, and Perkins gave him straight gas the entire showdown. He hit 96 mph on six pitches before cranking up and reaching 98 on his final offering to Ortiz, who sent the pitch 419 feet into the bullpen behind center field. It was the first homer Perkins allowed this season in 178 plate appearances.

Success against his former team is nothing new for Ortiz, who was allowed to leave the organization after the 2002 season. He is hitting .333 (54 for 162) with 12 homers against the Twins, and is 9 for 19 (.474) at Target Field. His fingerprints have been all over this series, with go-ahead singles late in the first two games.

Thome never would have been in a position to put the Twins ahead in the eighth if not for Blackburn's sharp effort.

Few could say they saw this outing coming from him. In his previous eight starts, he was 3-5 with an 8.15 ERA and 65 hits allowed in 38 2-3 innings. He had allowed 16 earned runs in his last three starts.

If Scott Baker wasn't placed on the disabled list on Tuesday with an elbow injury, Blackburn may very well have been pitching for his job Wednesday night.

All he did was handcuff one of the deepest, most formidable lineups in the game for almost seven innings. With a biting sinker and a befuddling changeup, Blackburn held the highest-scoring offense in the majors scoreless through six as the Twins took a 2-0 lead.

The Red Sox finally got on the board in the seventh, but only after Twins second baseman Trevor Plouffe muffed a grounder from Jacoby Ellsbury that would have ended the inning. Marco Scutaro followed with an RBI single to chase Blackburn, and Perkins got Adrian Gonzalez to pop out to end the inning.

Perkins (4-2) gave up one run and two hits in 1 1-3 innings for the win and Nathan's save was No. 255 for his career, moving him past Rick Aguilera for the most in Twins history.

Mike Aviles had two hits for the Red Sox, and Delmon Young went 2 for 2 with two walks for the Twins.

NOTES: The Twins got some good news earlier in the day when manager Ron Gardenhire announced Justin Morneau will be activated from the disabled list on Friday in Cleveland. Morneau has been out since June 9 after having neck surgery. ... Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia was given the day off. "He was fighting me on it the last two days," manager Terry Francona said. "Last night after the game, he's like, 'I'm tired.' This will be really good for him." ... Francona disputed a call in the sixth when umpire Ted Barrett gave the speedy Ben Revere home on a double by Joe Mauer that was caught by a fan. ... Perkins has given up five runs ? four earned ? in his last three appearances. He had an 11 appearance scoreless streak before that. ... The Twins are off Thursday and will begin a three-game series against the Indians in Cleveland on Friday. Carl Pavano (6-9, 4.71) will take the mound for the Twins against Justin Masterson (9-7, 2.71). Thome will continue his pursuit of career homer No. 600 in the place where his career began. He is two away from becoming the eighth player to reach the mark. ... The Red Sox are off Thursday as well and will head to Seattle for a three-game set against the Mariners starting on Friday. John Lackey (10-8, 6.14 ERA) will start Game 1 for Boston against Blake Beavan (3-2, 2.83 ERA). Lackey has been improving lately after a dreadful start. He allowed three runs in six innings in his previous start against the New York Yankees.

Holiday Travelers Welcome Back The Vacation

Eric Risberg/AP Forget the staycation; more Americans are heading out for far-away fun this holiday weekend.

This Memorial Day weekend is kicking off what promises to be the best vacation travel season since 2007. ?Workers are starting to regain enough confidence in their employment situation to ask for and actually use vacation time,? John Challenger said in a written analysis. He?s chief executive of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc., an outplacement firm based in Chicago.

Notes

*2011 numbers are projections from ATA.

Over the past three summers, the travel and leisure sectors have been hurt by the surge in ?staycations,? the stay-at-home alternatives for people who couldn?t afford destination vacations. Once the recession took hold in 2008, millions of Americans had no choice but to look for fun in their own backyards because they had lost jobs or their work hours had been cut. In addition, many people who still had good jobs stayed home, too ? fearful that they might be next in the unemployment line. Today, the headlines about mass layoffs are gone. In fact, planned layoffs are now at the lowest level since the late 1990s. Challenger statistics show that for the first four months of 2011, employers announced 167,239 job cuts ? down 24 percent from a year ago. ?Job security is the strongest it has been in several years, as corporate job cutting shrinks to pre-recession lows,? Challenger said. That change is helping bring back vacation planning. Here?s one way to measure the rebound: The Air Transport Association, which represents major carriers, said that in the summer of 2007, domestic airlines carried about 218 million passengers. After the recession hit, that number of passengers fell to just 200 million in the summer of 2009. With 18 million fewer people getting on airplanes, the downturn rippled out to hotels, rental cars, restaurants and so on.

An IBM analysis of social media shows what was most on our minds last year compared to this weekend.

Enlarge IBM 2010: Costs dominated Memorial Day plans.

IBM 2010: Costs dominated Memorial Day plans.

Enlarge IBM 2011: Travelers get into the holiday spirit.

IBM 2011: Travelers get into the holiday spirit.

This year, the trade group estimates that during the June-August period, the number of passengers boarding planes will tick up to 206 million. The lodging industry also is reporting gains, with occupancy and room rates running roughly 5 percent higher than last year. The uptick already is being felt this holiday weekend. AAA, the auto club, estimates that 34.9 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more over this Memorial Day weekend. That?s the best figure since 2007, despite this year?s sharp increases in both gasoline and plane tickets costs. IBM found a different way to estimate travel plans. It used advanced computer analytics to look across the social media world ? examining blog posts and tweets ? to see if people were talking about canceling their Memorial Day plans because of inflation. IBM said its analysis identified more than 11,500 individual references to travel and Memorial Day, and found that just 1.6 percent of this year?s posts discussed canceling Memorial Day trips, versus 2.8 percent in 2010. ?Memorial Day travel experienced a gain of more than 14 percent in 2010, and this year we expect to add slightly to that gain, due to an increase in air travel and an improvement in the overall domestic economic picture,? AAA President and CEO Robert L. Darbelnet said in a statement.
